The Museum of the Plains was founded in 1975 in the town of Perryton, Texas to preserve the local history of the town and county as well as the history of the Southern Plains. Initially located in the county courthouse, land was donated shortly after its founding and the museum moved to its current location. This moved has allowed the museum to grow from a single building to a large 4 acre complex consisting of a modern building as well as historic buildings from the area.
The Museum of the Plains is a non profit 501c3 organization that operates from a variety of sources ranging from the City of Perryton and Ochiltree County to private donations and memberships. The museum is governed by a Board of Directors and has a small paid staff. A large and active group of volunteers help keep the museum updated and ever changing.
